eCAD LIBRARY ENGINEERING | CASE STUDY
How we turned 8,000+ inconsistently named Allegro footprints
into a searchable geometry database. A datasheet goes in,and the footprints it
matches come out.
Cadence Allegro 17.4 | SKILL | Python | SQLite | October 2026
Every PCB team eventually inherits a library it can't read. Ours held more than 11000 footprints in the master server, built by several librarians over many years with no naming guideline. A name like qfn40_5mmsq_1mm0h_smd is reasonably clear. Thousands of others are not. So new eCAD Librarian stopped searching and started redrawing. Every redraw adds another near-duplicate footprint, which makes the next search harder. This article describes the method we built to break that cycle. It covers the problem, the key decision, the working pipeline, real data decoded from one of our own footprints, and a model of the time it saves.
The Problem …
